Segada
The 15U
Boys team name is Segada. This name was chosen due to its
historical significance to the local community. It comes
from a now extinct language of the Iroquois people called
Laurentian.
History
records that several dialects of Laurentian may have existed in
the 16th century in the St. Lawrence River valley. Since only
sparse records were made by Jacques Cartier during his voyages,
the Laurentians may have indeed spoken several distinct languages.
At least one Laurentian word may still be in use today: the word
"canada", meaning village in Laurentian. Jacques Cartier
used the word to describe both the region and the river that it
crosses.
In
1545, Jacques Cartier published a journal of his voyages and
included a short list of Laurentian words. One of the included
words was the word “segada”, which means one (1). This
represents the team philosophy of one team (not a group of
individuals).
Team
Information
The focus
of the 15U boys team will be on the development of the athlete
(Training to Train). This includes both skill and cognitive
development, as well as basic volleyball tactics and team skills.
The Pegasus Volleyball Club supports the Long-Term Athlete
Development (LTAD) program. To learn more, visit the
Volleyball Canada website at www.volleyball.ca and
click on LTAD.
The
coaching team is committed to providing each athlete with a
valuable developmental experience. Each athlete will be
provided with an equal opportunity to learn. The coaching
team, however, cannot guarantee equal playing time. It is the
intent of the coaching team to get each athlete involved in
matches, but this may not always happen. Please note that
the allocation of playing time is at the coaches discretion and is
not up for negotiation. We would encourage parents to be the
athlete’s biggest supporter both in and out of competition.
Please
feel free to contact the coaching team via email should you have
any additional questions.
